Indirect prompt-injection guard for DeepSeek Harness.

An agent that browses the web or reads a repository puts third-party text into the same channel that carries its operator's instructions. A model has no reliable way to tell them apart, so a page, a README, or an MCP tool result can ask the agent to run a command or post a file somewhere. This plugin does not try to make the model immune to that. It narrows what the retrieved text can reach: it marks the agent once a tool result arrives from an untrusted source, gates the privileged calls that follow, and refuses outright when credential material appears in an argument heading off the machine.

Measured, not asserted

Run against AgentDojo v1.2.1 — the benchmark CaMeL and Fides both report on. Full method, caveats, and reproduction in eval/; no API key required.

Two conclusions, both uncomfortable, both worth stating plainly:

The pattern detector is not a security boundary. It catches one attack family out of fifteen. AgentDojo's ignore_previous writes "Ignore your previous iunstructions" — one typo past the rule — and important_instructions never uses override phrasing at all. Treat the signals as telemetry. This is the result the literature predicts for detectors (arXiv:2504.11168, arXiv:2502.15427), reproduced here on this code rather than argued away.

Origin tainting is complete but coarse. Every injection traverses a tool that was observed returning attacker-controlled bytes, so provenance catches 100% of what the detector misses — at the cost of gating 97.6% of consequential calls in those suites. A guard that fires on nearly every action becomes an alarm the operator dismisses. That trade is the empirical case for per-value dataflow tracking (CaMeL, Fides) over the per-agent boolean used here.

What survives both findings is the narrowest control in the plugin: the unconditional refusal to pass credential material to a network-capable tool. That removes the exfiltration leg of the "lethal trifecta" rather than trying to out-guess the attacker's wording.

Threat model

The target is indirect prompt injection — the attacker controls content the agent retrieves, not the operator's prompt. Two things have to line up for that to cause damage: untrusted text has to enter the context, and a privileged tool call has to follow it. The guard breaks the second step.

Install

The release tarball ships prebuilt lib/, so pnpm never needs permission to run this package's build script. Pinning the version URL also means a later push cannot change what you installed.

A git install fetches sources rather than built artifacts, so pnpm has to run this package's prepare script to compile it. pnpm ≥10 refuses that until you allow it by name: the first add fails and prints the key to copy into your profile's pnpm-workspace.yaml.

Re-run the add afterwards. Treat that allowance as what it is — permission to run this package's build on your machine at install time — and pin a commit (github:sashankh/dsh-taintguard#<sha>) so a later push cannot change what runs.

The package ships a bundle patch, so the row is added to your profile automatically. Verify without booting:

Start in observe mode

mode: observe never blocks or prompts. It still marks untrusted results, so you can see what the guard would have gated on your own traffic before you let it interrupt anything.

Names are *-wildcard patterns over tool names. A pattern that matches nothing currently registered is legal, so mcp__* can be declared before any MCP server is configured.

How a result becomes untrusted

Signals are graded, because a single suspicious phrase is a bad reason to interrupt someone.

High confidence — one is enough. These have no ordinary meaning in a retrieved document: instruction override (ignore all previous instructions), role reassignment (you are now …), an impersonated system turn (<|im_start|>system, a leading System:), a directive to send data to a URL, and a lure to run supplied commands.

Medium confidence — mediumQuorum required. Credential solicitation, an imperative addressed to an AI, hidden-text styling (display:none, white-on-white), and zero-width or bidirectional-override characters. Each is individually explainable in honest content, which is why two are required by default.

Credential scanning is separate and does not use quorums. It matches vendor-prefixed formats with fixed shapes — AWS access key ids, GitHub tokens, sk- keys, Google API keys, Slack tokens, PEM private-key headers, and JWTs — plus any canary you register. General entropy heuristics are deliberately absent: their false positives would land on a blocking path.

Model Experience

An untainted agent sees nothing. The guard adds no system-prompt text, registers no tools, and leaves results unchanged, so token usage and KV-cache reuse are unaffected on the common path.

When a result is tainted and annotateUntrustedResults is on, that one result is re-framed as quoted data:

That adds a fixed 265 characters to the affected result and nothing to any other turn. When a call is gated, the model receives the refusal as a tool error naming the source tool and the matched signals, so it can explain the situation instead of silently retrying.

Known Limitations and Deferred Work

  • Signals are patterns, not comprehension — and the measurement says so. 9.9% recall on AgentDojo. An attacker who knows these rules phrases around them, and AgentDojo's authors did so without trying. Treat the detector as telemetry; the provenance path is what carries the load.
  • Taint is per-agent and sticky for the agent's lifetime. Once untrusted content is in the context it stays there, so the guard does not clear the mark on a later user message. Measured cost: 97.6% of consequential calls gated in the AgentDojo suites. Per-value labelling in the manner of Fides, or per-source expiry, is the obvious refinement and is not implemented.
  • Only text is scanned. Instructions inside an image, a PDF, or another binary attachment are invisible here.
  • ask degrades to deny without an approval channel. That is the harness contract for PreToolDecision, not a choice this plugin makes; unattended deployments should set deny explicitly so the behaviour is stated rather than inherited.
  • Sinks are named, not derived. A privileged tool the config does not list is not gated. The defaults cover the shipped tool catalog; a deployment with custom tools has to add them.
  • This is not a "by-design" defense. It is a runtime monitor. The design-patterns literature (arXiv:2506.08837) argues that structural constraint, not monitoring, is what yields guarantees. Use this as defense-in-depth behind sandboxing and least privilege.

Permissions and data

The guard adds no tools, opens no sockets, and reads no files of its own. It sees the tool names, arguments, and text results that already pass through the harness, and it keeps one in-memory WeakMap from agent to taint record which is discarded with the agent. Nothing is written to disk and nothing leaves the machine.

Log lines and denial reasons name the rule id and the originating tool only. Matched credential values are never logged or echoed back into model context.

Uninstall

dsh plugin --profile <name> remove dsh-taintguard

The bundle patch is removed with it. To keep it installed but non-blocking, set mode: observe — the listeners stay attached and log, but only the credential-egress refusal still blocks.

Troubleshooting

Report vulnerabilities privately through GitHub Security Advisories rather than a public issue. Please do not include real credentials in a report — a redacted reproduction is enough.

Tests drive the real ToolRuntime from @deepseek-ai/dsh-tools — the guard's listeners run in the actual waterfall, and gated calls are observed as the registry reports them, rather than through a hand-built stub.

The AgentDojo evaluation lives in eval/ and runs without an API key.
